When All Is Lost

2 Samuel 9:3

New International Version (NIV)

The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”

Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”

For Meditation

The news was grave and urgent, and there was pandemonium in the Palace of King Saul. He had been slain in the mountains of Gilboa with his son Jonathan (2 Samuel 1:21-22). A caring nurse picked the little boy to escape a possible massacre. However, the boy fell and became crippled in both feet. His name was Mephibosheth, and he was only five years old (2 Sam. 4:4). Jonathan was his father. Crippled and orphaned, Mephibosheth’s chance of becoming a future king of Israel was gone. David was the new king, and the only comfort for Mephibosheth was obscurity in a town called Lo Debar (9:4). His world had collapsed, and a tough life confronted him. However, the news that would change his life forever came from Jerusalem one afternoon. David would not eat until Mephibosheth took his seat at the king’s table (5, 7).

  1. Do you see how God works? Do you see how He cares for the oppressed and needy?
  2. Have you noticed how He refreshes the weary and disillusioned? Without hope and almost forgotten; have you noticed how God has always graciously surprised His servants?
  3. Can you recall the experience of fugitive Moses on the backside of Horeb (Ex. 3:1-4)? How about Jephthah (Judges 11:4-7), David (1 Sam. 16:11-13; 22:1-2), Elijah (1 Kings 19:3-9), and Paul (Acts 11:25-26)?
  4. Do you know grace? Have you ever experienced its warmth when every door was shut and everything seemed lost – when everybody had deserted you? Has the ceaseless flow of grace from Calvary found its way into your situation before?
  5. So, why are you afraid this time? What has come your way that is beyond the influence of God’s grace through Christ Jesus? Why don’t you take the challenge of Hebrews 4:16 today and experience the power of God’s mercy and grace?

I pray you kick yourself out of that depressive mood and embrace the possibility and power of our Lord Jesus Christ over your situation. He is waiting for your call.

When all is lost; Christ Jesus!

Shalom
