2 Chronicles 32:19
New International Version (NIV)
They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of human hands.
For Meditation
“Your daughter is dead”, the messenger said, “Don’t bother the Teacher anymore (Lk. 8:49).” In other words, “It’s useless. The Teacher, or whatever you call Him, cannot do anything about it.” But, Jairus held on to the assurance of Jesus (50). In his house, the professional mourners ridiculed Jesus when He said the girl was “not dead but asleep. (52)” Hear their mockery through sanctified ears: “Don’t let that man raise your hope for nothing. Your daughter is dead and there is nothing anybody could do about it. Let’s get to the funeral and burial arrangements.”
- Have you heard that before? Have people mocked you for trusting God and His promise to you because you steadfastly waited for Him?
- Are the negative voices drowning your faith in the Lord for that special something you’ve put to Him in prayer? Do you hear nothing but, “Be real”, or “Let’s be practical”?
- You see, it’s one thing when unbelievers sing that chorus. They can be forgiven, for “They [speak] about the God of Jerusalem as they [do} about the gods of the other people of the world – the work of human hands (2 Chron. 32:17-19).” Is that not the voice of their master, “the lair and the father of lies (Jn. 8:44)”?
- But, it’s another thing when a believer sings that same song. For, how could the child of God impugn the ability of Jesus to raise the dead, as Martha implied in her statement at the grave of Lazarus (Jn. 11:39)? What happened when Jesus commanded Lazarus to, “come out” (43)? What happened when Jesus held the hand of Jairus’ daughter and said, “My child, get up” (Lk. 8:54).
- Didn’t the winds and the water obey Jesus’ command in the storm (8:24)? At his command, didn’t Peter walk on water (Matt. 14:29)? Isn’t He the One who died and rose from the dead and now seated at the right hand of God in the heavenly realms (Eph. 1:19-20)? What humanly impossible thing didn’t Jesus do when He walked this earth, and what more can He not do for us when the entire world says, “It is impossible”?
I pray you will not let your faith wane in the face of seemingly impossible challenges, which may be confronting you now.
Rather: May you hear the voice of our Master and Lord to Jairus: “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed. (Lk. 8:50)”; and may your dead situation come to life again when Jesus gets to your house and speaks to your situation (53-55).
It is well!
Shalom
