Exemplary Living

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12)

It is said that respect is won and not demanded. Yet people claim it with nothing in their lives to commend it. Many fight for recognition when they have done nothing excellent or praiseworthy. They want their opinions heard without profundity. Youth cannot be claimed as an excuse. Neither could the lack of wealth be held in protest for it. The Akans of Ghana present a proverb that says it best. “A child with clean hands earns the right to share a meal with adults from the same bowl.” It is not so much the age or the wealth a person possesses, but the way the person carries him or herself that brings recognition and respect.

Paul made this point to young Timothy when he wrote: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Tim. 4:12). He delineates five noteworthy character traits that prevent youthful timidity.

First, the way one communicates is significant. The choice of words, the tone, the gestures, the body language, the aptness and depth of what is said, are all important. If a young person communicates with such care, they would be heard.

Second, there is a premium value for Christian conduct. The mark of integrity in a young life shows maturity and a commitment to Christ, which cannot be despised by anyone.

Third, love reveals the heart of Christ in a person’s life. It is a quality no one can ignore in anyone, young or old.

Fourth, Paul encouraged Timothy to hold his faith up in attestation of his Christian commitment and godly living. A person of faith can inspire others to believe in Christ and to live for Him. It is a contagious way of living, and very inspirational.

Fifth, Paul admonished Timothy to live in purity. A Christian life tainted with immorality cannot impact anyone; it will rather dispel. However, a life lived in purity is always admired.

Paul’s instruction to young Timothy is a timely intervention for every young life in Christ. It is an admonition to live in a manner that draws respect and positively impacts lives. It is a precursor to ministry and a necessary example for Christian living.  The highest honor every young person could give to Christ is to live above reproach. In this call, you cannot fail the Lord. You have a duty and responsibility to uphold.

So, may you, young men and women who are celebrating your youthfulness today, recognize the value of authentic Christian living in the church today and live it. You have been called for such a time as this to display the beauty of God in the face of Christ and to spread His fragrance of life to all people. It is your commission and His victory and blessedness is your crown.

Congratulations!
