The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” – 2 Kings 7:2
David was right. Only the fool can say in his heart that “There is no God” (Ps. 14:1). They lack understanding and they do not recognize God from His creation and mighty deeds. They turn to their own evil ways and reap the consequences of their arrogance and folly. We can say the same thing about the one who says, “God cannot do it.” It is one thing to speak out of frustration. The Lord knows the heart; He is merciful, and will forgive. But it is something else to speak out of disbelief and mock God. We call up the testimony of the unnamed officer on whose arm King Joram, son of Ahab, leaned during the Aramean siege of Samaria (2 Kings 7:2).
Israel was hit hard by the Aramean attack and so there was terrible famine in Samaria (25; 28-29). The king went after Elisha’s head as a result (31). Don’t we all find scapegoats when things turn sour in our mouths? The blame game; remember (Gen. 3:12-13)? But the prophet had only one message for the king: “About this time tomorrow, a seah of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria” (1).
The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” (2).
Why do people talk arrogantly about the things they don’t know about or understand? This was a matter between the king and the man of God; so why didn’t the king’s servant shut his mouth? Solomon was right. “The mouths of fools are their undoing, and their lips are a snare to their very lives” (Prov. 18:7).
“You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it!”
Don’t mess up with God! He put the Arameans to flight and they left the booty to collect (2 Kings 7:5-16). A stampede ensued at the gate of Samaria and the man who mocked God was crushed to death (17).
God is All-Powerful. Nothing is impossible with Him (Lk. 1:37). That’s why the Virgin Mary could carry a baby with no human intervention (33-36). With us humans, many things are impossible, “but with God all things are possible” (Matt. 19:26). That is why Christ is able to save the sinner, even the most arrogant, who thinks they have it all together (23-25). He is able to save you too. Not only that; Christ is able to meet every impossible situation in your life in accordance to His sovereign will.
So, don’t speak arrogantly before Jesus. Don’t say He cannot take care of the impossible situation confronting you now. Trust Him and you will see His glory in the most unusual way. Don’t be crushed to death at the gate of your Samaria. The miracle of Calvary is yours to enjoy forever. Just believe.
