I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe – Ephesians 1:18-19
Hearing is a very important and vital component of communication, yet, we take it for granted. Even though many systems and instruments have been invented and created to facilitate communication, nothing beats the natural ability to see and hear when communicating with one another, or with the beauty of nature.
Imagine, for a second, walking through a beautiful tropical rain forest without the sound of those colorful birds chirping and singing and the sound of the wind ruffling through the leaves . The most frustrating and upsetting experience of them all is to talk with the one you love and to not be able to hear him/her, or be heard either. For, nothing beats the satisfaction of speaking to your spouse, child, or friend, and be assured that you have been heard. Yes, one can read the lips or hear through sign language, but nothing beats the beauty of hearing the voice and expression of a lover over a candlelight dinner.
That’s why Alexander Graham Bell felt so much for deaf people that he devoted himself to help them gain that ability somehow, a passion that led him to his wife, Mabel, who was one of his students. It was his intense passion to give his lover the ability to hear that developed his interest in sound and electricity, and to his invention of the telephone. Yet, we who have that ability take it for granted. If “Crazy Bell,” as they called him, went to that extent to help his lover hear him, can you imagine the effort God has put into getting us to hear Him communicate with us?
Our five senses are exactly meant for communication with God and with one another. When God chose Israel and entered into a special relationship with them, He desired for them to hear His commands and understand Him, so that they could have good fellowship with Him and with one another. However, the heartbreak of God was that Israel became a calloused people, so they hardly heard Him with their ears or saw Him with their eyes that He would heal them (Matt.13:15).
We have the same problem with the children of the kingdom today. We hear God every day, yet we don’t hear Him. But God wants us to hear Him in a way that reveals the riches of our inheritance in Christ Jesus to us. That’s the essence of Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe”(Eph. 1:18-19).
It’s my prayer for you this week that your heart would be enlightened to the revelation of God for you and your family, and for His church in Christ Jesus.
