Absolutely Nothing!

Jeremiah 32:17

New International Version (NIV)

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

For meditation

The Lord had spoken, and Jeremiah believed it. Jerusalem was going to fall to the Babylonian siege because of the sins of the people. Exile had been decreed by God and nothing was left for them but false hope. What then was the value of property? It didn’t make economic sense to buy a piece of land at such a time, but that’s exactly what God told Jeremiah to do. “Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it’” (Jer. 32:7).

Sometimes God doesn’t make sense. What He tells us, especially when we are struggling in some quagmire, cannot register on the radar of our finite and self-deluded minds. That’s why He is God and we are human. When He shifts gear to a speed beyond our comprehension, our proper response should only be faith expressed in obedience. God’s word is His very self. There is no falsehood in Him (Nu. 23:19; Ja. 1:17). Abraham learned this lesson with the birth and sacrifice of Isaac on Moriah (21:2; 22:2). Mary had her experience with the virgin conception (Lk. 1:34). Peter learned his on the shores of Lake Gennesaret after a fruitless fishing expedition (Lk. 6:5). Their obedience became opportunities for proper worship of God’s majesty.

True to God’s word, Hanamel proposed a land sale to Jeremiah, and Jeremiah bought and received the signed deed (Jer. 32:9-11). By this transaction, God promised to restore Judah after Babylon: “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land (15).

Then Jeremiah prayed: “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you” (17).

  1. Are there situations in your life you have labelled, “Impossible?”
  2. Is God telling you something that doesn’t make sense?
  3. Is there any impossibility in Him (Lk. 1:37; Matt. 19:26)?
  4. How can He be God if your situation is beyond His ability and power?
  5. How could Jesus be our Savior if Calvary and the tomb had proved too powerful for Him?

It all comes down to the fact that Jesus is the Self-existent, Sovereign God – the Almighty Creator of all that is seen and unseen. Nothing is too difficult for Him. Absolutely nothing! As He says, “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: Is there anything too hard for me?” (Jer. 32:27).

So: May you trust God in every circumstance and situation; and may you experience His glory in a manner that will mesmerize and lead you into a deeper worship of God’s majesty in Jesus.

If there is anything beyond the power of Jesus, then He is not God.

Shalom
