Our Example in Suffering

1 Peter 2:23

New International Version (NIV)

When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

For Meditation

The most important thing in life is not what happens to us as much as how we react to it. For, the measure of our victory is in the attitude of our response. The issue then becomes the life testimonies of those who have trod this path before us, and whose example to follow for victory.

  1. Can there be a better example for the child of God to emulate other than that of the Son of God who came to lead us back to Him? What benefit is a guide, if the explorer would not follow their lead?
  2. In much the same way, what is Christ to the child of God if His life on earth is of no consequence to us? If we cannot look to the life of Jesus for direction and encouragement, what is left for the Christian than the same old selfish ways (2 Cor. 5:17)?
  3. So, what do we do when people insult us? Can we learn from the example of Jesus who did not retaliate when they hurled insults at Him (1 Pt. 2:23)? Can we hold back every threat of revenge when we suffer all kinds of abuse from others?
  4. Can we commit them all to Him who judges justly? Is He not the One who has said that we should leave room for His wrath; for it is His to avenge and that He will repay (Rm. 12:19)?
  5. As Christ found strength in self-emptying, servanthood, humility, and obedience to overcome the cross (Phil. 2:5-9); will He not pour that strength in us when we look to Him in our pain and suffering? Will He not perfect His strength in us when we admit our weakness in the midst of personal attacks – the sufficiency of His grace for us? (2 Cor. 12:9)?

I pray that God gives you this winning attitude in everything; especially, when you come under attack from family, friends, and in the office.

May you stand tall in the example of Christ and glorify the Father in every storm and gale of your life, with a shot of His grace; and may you rejoice that you suffer for His name, as eternity in His presence beacons you home.

Shalom
