Matthew 11:28
New International Version (NIV)
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
For Meditation
I remember the period of unimagined disturbances in our church twelve years ago. A particular family determined to have me for lunch with them after every challenging meeting, and to rest in their home. I treasured the calm and tranquility those moments brought to my life. Their hospitality, matured review of the day’s activities, and wise counsel refreshed me each time. They’ve since become my parents, and our relationship continues to grow by the day.
It reminds me of Jesus’ invitation to “all who are weary and burdened,” to come into His rest (Matt. 11:28). His shelter is perfect and provides comfort and security away from this harsh and demanding world that drives people like the taskmasters of Egypt. Ruthless competition stresses the rich in the business arena where selfishness is a virtue and the hard-charging partner is the hero. Stress has become the silent executioner everywhere, bringing devastation and sorrow to an untold number of families.
Jesus’ invitation provides escape from this house of terror. He saw and experienced this carnage first hand in human flesh and circumstances. He rose above its ravages and died to work salvation for us. Now seated at the right hand of God in majesty – the position of ultimate power and authority, He invites the weary to come and find rest in Him. The invitation comes with love and empathy to the down-trodden to come and receive authentic rest from Him. It’s a gracious invitation that is open to the rich as well as the poor, and the marginalized and well-positioned alike. Since Jesus is the Prince of Peace, He is able to harmonize our scattered souls. That is a promise we can absolutely trust. David testifies to this in the timeless Psalm 23: Jesus is a restorer of distressed souls. Paul assures us that all who come to Jesus by, “prayer and petitions, with thanksgiving” shall receive a peace that transcends all understanding to guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7).
- Are you burdened by the cares of this world?
- Is the current world order stressing you with its uncertainties?
- Are the demands of your job or business reaching unbearable proportions?
- Is your marriage breaking under this load; or is it keeping you from settling down into one?
- Has real peace eluded you?
I pray you take Jesus’ challenge today and experience a peace and a refreshing you have never known before.
It is true, my friend! I have moved from where you are now, and have taken shelter in Christ. There is turbulence all around, but I have security and comfort in His arms. He can provide same for you. I can testify to its veracity with my life. Why don’t you try Him?
Taking the Jesus challenge today is a bargain you’ll never regret.
Shalom
