Exemplary Living

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12)

A proverb of the Akans of Ghana says: “When a child learns to keep his hands clean, he sits with adults to share a meal from the same bowl”. It is a recognition of decency that rewards the child with a place among the elders. Age and wealth by themselves do not bring recognition and respect. The way people carry themselves is what does it. The truth is, respect does not come on a silver platter. It is won!

How futile it is for someone to crave respect when he has exhibited no humility or decorum in life. It is equally pointless for others to fight for recognition when nothing extraordinary decorates their name. However, let a person speak to a situation with knowledge and wisdom, and observe how promptly recognition and respect hurry to their side. Integrity can never be lost on even one’s most contentious adversary. Though unexpressed, they hold you in high respect. That was Paul’s drive to the heart of young Timothy in today’s focal verse.

Essentially, Paul counselled Timothy to take the high road in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity in life – five Christian character traits that no one could disregard despite his youthfulness. It’s a noble and exemplary way of living Timothy must choose if he should gain recognition, audience, and respect for his ministry.

First, the way one communicates is significant. Choice of words, tone, gestures, body language, timing, and the quality of the message itself are essentials of excellent communication. Young people who apply themselves to this art cannot be ignored anywhere.

Second, excellent Christian conduct has premium value in life. If integrity marks the life of a young person, it reveals maturity and a commitment to Christ that cannot be despised by anyone.

Similarly, no one can disregard a young person who loves much. It is foundational to Christian life, and one that shows Christlikeness and gains approval before God and people.

Fourth, Paul encouraged Timothy to hold his faith up high in attestation of his total trust in God and his unyielding commitment to Christ. A young person of faith can inspire others to yield their life to Christ and live for Him. Age is irrelevant in this matter, but fidelity.

Finally, Paul admonished Timothy to live a pure life. A Christian life tainted with immorality cannot impact anyone. It rather dispels. But a life lived in purity will always be admired.

Paul’s advice to Timothy is relevant to every young person in Christ today. It is an admonition to live in a manner that positively impacts lives and draws respect for God’s honour. No young person should live in a way that gives cause for people to despise him or her. Their life should rather bring glory to Christ.

This is what gives meaning to the celebration of your youthfulness this week, YAM, and we applaud you in Christ.
