A Test of Grace

Job 42:11

New International Version (NIV)

All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver[a] and a gold ring.

For Meditation

Interesting!
After neglecting Job during his pain and suffering, they felt no shame coming around to “comfort and console him” (Job 42:11). Where were they when Job needed them the most?
That’s humans for you. If you’re capable to meet their needs, they’ll run to you when you cough, asking, “Did you call me?” Let things turn south for you for a moment, and their memory will fail them as quickly as they ran to you. They’ll withdraw like one withdraws from its famous skunk odor.
It’s very human to seek revenge when God restores our fortunes after a terrible ordeal that drove people away from us. But not Job. He was more gracious than in his pre-affliction time. His heart remained with God, and he gladly forgave and welcomed his brothers and sisters who deserted him throughout his affliction. What a man!
Job becomes our model in dealing with ourselves when wounded by our dear ones. Despite their offenses against us, we must choose to forgive and restore fellowship with them.

People often talk about forgiveness without restored fellowship. Yes, we must be wise in dealing with those who have hurt us in the past, but we shouldn’t let that stop us from trusting again. As difficult and threatening as it may be, God releases grace to carry us when we determine to be like Jesus in His honor. He blesses our total forgiveness, just as He has completely forgiven us, rather than a half-hearted reconciliation. He withholds nothing from us after reconciling us to Himself. We become Christlike when we do the same – the greatest honor to Him in response to Calvary.

For encouragement, remember that God restored to Job, twice of all his pre-ordeal fortunes after he had forgiven and prayed for his friends (v.10). We need His restoration and blessing in the same manner after our worst ordeal. Don’t miss it for anything.
