And the Lord Heard

Numbers 12:2

New International Version (NIV)

“Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the Lord heard this.

There is a sweet taste around this scripture that warms my heart as a leader, but more than that, as a child of God. It stands on the premise of obedience and intimate relationship with the Lord. I see it as an assurance that God covers the back of His servants. We have our God-assigned tasks to do and we can only look to Jesus and move forward with Him to accomplish them. It’s heartwarming, therefore, to draw assurance from the story of Moses and his two siblings – Aaron and Miriam. It all started with two related questions that sprang from the well of jealousy in Aaron and Miriam (Nu. 12:1-15).“Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? … Hasn’t he also spoken through us?”

  1. What were they thinking about? Why were they not content with what the Lord had done in their lives because of their younger brother’s ministry? As God asked them, “Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”
  2. Weren’t big brother Aaron and big sister Miriam being rebellious here? In their open display of opposition to their younger sibling’s marriage to a Cushite woman, did they not reveal a deep-seated malady every Christian should guard against – jealousy?
  3. Did Aaron and Miriam know who they were attacking? Do you see what happens when we step away from living by the Spirit and settle for the gratification of the flesh (Gal. 5:16)? Do you see how we open ourselves up to the ugly acts of the sinful nature, “… hatred, discord, jealousy … selfish ambition, dissensions factions and envy” (20-21)?
  4. I love what happened when the two opened their mouth against their brother.“And the Lord heard this” (Nu. 12:2b). Isn’t that wonderful? Isn’t it interesting to know what happens when God’s children come under such malicious attacks and baseless accusations?
  5. Why then do you worry about the wind of jealousy blowing your way today? Why do you spend good capital responding to them? Why speak when God, who knows the intent of human hearts, has heard it? Have you forgotten what He says in Romans 12:19, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it iswritten: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

I pray, however, that you notice three things God said about Moses in His rebuke to Aaron and Miriam – humility, faithfulness, and intimacy with God (3,7-8). That’s it, my friend! God defends His humble, faithful, and intimate children.

So, may you pay no attention to the loose tongues of your accusers and be distracted from your God-assigned task for the day; but may you focus on Christ and adopt His attitude on the way to the cross that brought Him the victory (Heb. 12:2; Isa. 53:7).

Shalom

  1. Selfishness can develop in us hatred and jealousy. None of those three words have ever brought honor to God. Cain because of hatred and jealousy jumped on his brother and killed him(Gn4:8). As children of God, in order to stand that, we need to resist the enemy. If we do, God will give us the strength and perfection in Christ-Jesus(1Pt4:10).

Pastor, thank you very much for those words which remind us of the sovereignty of God, but also his goodness towards us.
