John 2:24-25
New International Version (NIV)
But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people …he knew what was in each person.
For Meditation
“He said he loved me,” the young girl said between sobs, “and I believed him; and why shouldn’t I? He called multiple times everyday and caressed me with his soft and tender voice. The flowers, gifts, lunches, and the walk along the beach at sunset. I was enthralled by his warmth and caught in his grip. I had never felt this kind of love and attention in my life before. So, I believed him when he said there was nothing wrong about it, because we were going to get married anyway. He even quoted 1 Corinthians 7:8-9 to support his claim that we could do it, because our hearts were yoked together in love, and that is the real marriage. The rest is just formality. And I believed him! But now, he wants nothing with my pregnancy. His fiat is either I abort or get out of his life. I am ruined.”
Trust is subjective to what we come to believe as truth. What we see or hear eventually play on our minds and seek our attention. Over a period of attractive presentations and soft advocacy, our hearts come along and play them back in our minds as reality we can believe. Then, we get locked in trust that could disappoint terribly.
The young lady’s story is everybody’s story in diverse ways. It depicts the wickedness of the human heart as Jeremiah said. “The heart is deceptive above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jer. 17:9). No one knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them (1 Cor. 2:11). Because of this human limitation, we are easily deceived. They raise us on human pedestal and pull the rug from under us. But there is One who alone we can trust absolutely. He is Christ Jesus our Lord.
They tried it on Jesus when He walked the corridors of ancient Palestine. They said they believed Him many times. Yet, they walked away when He needed them most. His best friends deserted and denied Him in His darkest hour, but none of it surprised Him. Jesus knew all people and what was in each person’s heart because He is God (Jn. 2:23-25).
We can, therefore, completely trust Him in everything. Not only that, He can open the hearts of the people to us if we yield to the Holy Spirit. To avoid disappointment and hurt, Jesus wants us to be wise in every situation (James 1:5).
So, have you lost trust in everybody because somebody has terribly disappointed you? Trust in the Lord, and He will restore your confidence in life. Trust in people to the extent that they trust God and reveal Christ in their lives. But, know that we’re not called to paranoia, but to cautions trust in the peace of our Redeemer King. That’s wisdom for the day.
