Human Limitation

Daniel 2:10-11

New International Version (NIV)

The astrologers answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! … No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among humans.”

For Meditation

  1. Isn’t it interesting how we think we know so much and boast about what we are able to do, given the little space God has given us to operate in in this world?
  2. Have you observed the arrogance of scientists when they propound their theories and talk about new discoveries, as if they own the universe? Have you listened carefully to the so called“experts” on TV and public discussions? How about university professors bluffing and showboating in lecture halls? Don’t they all sound as if they know everything?
  3. Worse of all, have you ever suffered under the oratory of false prophets, teachers, or preachers on Sunday mornings, talking about things they have no idea about?
  4. Are we not pathetic when we try to play God? But, what do we know? When the Almighty turns things up a little bit, when He confuses things a little bit, when He withdraws His hand a little bit, when He decides to show us that we are nothing but dust, see how distressed and chaotic things become for us? See how humbling the most knowledgeable and ‘anointed’ becomes?
  5. Can you imagine the embarrassment and humiliation the astrologers suffered when they confessed their human limitation before king Nebuchadnezzar? (Dan. 2:10-11). But, what happened when Daniel showed up after consulting God on the issue (21-22)?

I pray we will acknowledge our human limitation as Job did in His response to God’s interrogation at the end of the long discourse with his three friends: “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know …  My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore, I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:3-6).

It calls for humility before God to thank and praise Him for the wisdom and knowledge He has given you, and the revelation of Himself to you in Jesus Christ.

May that be your attitude in everything you do.

Shalom
