Matthew 14:25-27
New International Version (NIV)
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
For Meditation
- Isn’t fear our life’s worst enemy? Do you see how it easily defeats our faith and distracts our attention from possible success to failure and defeat?
- Do you see why Satan has made it his most trusted and effective weapon against humanity (Heb. 2:14-15)? How many great proposals haven’t been defeated by some dreadful imagination of disappointment and rejection?
- Do you remember the night Jesus came walking on water towards the disciples in the boat (Matt. 14:25-33)? Remember how in fear, they shouted, “It is a ghost” (v.26)? But, was it (v.27)?
- Isn’t that how we are? Don’t we mostly think or imagine the worst before we make some sense out of a situation as things become clearer? Do you see how many unnecessary worries and burdens we carry for days because of the ‘ghosts’ we see in our lives?
- So, can you try not to see a ghost in every situation that confronts you, regardless of how mucky and threatening they may be? Rather, can you trust Jesus to be in every circumstance and lean on Him for strength and direction to ride them to victory? But, when fear grips you before you can make sense of any situation, can you hear His soothing voice, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (v.2).?
I pray you will courageously confront every situation with a positive and optimistic attitude and exorcise the ‘ghosts’ you see in them for progress and victory.
May Jesus clear the fog around you, so you can see Him clearly through the eyes of faith; and may you respond to Him boldly as Peter did, “Lord, if it is you, tell me come to you on the water” (v.28).
Dare walk on water today!
Shalom
