Does Anybody Understand?

“And there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it (Rev 4:2).

Throughout the Bible, God has graced us with opportunities to peek into heaven to marvel at His majesty. Through the eyes of people like Isaiah and the Apostle John, He has blessed us with images of His glory that no one experiences and remains the same. In the experiences of Isaiah and John, God revealed His majesty, seated on His throne in full glory. Pondering over the beauty and splendour of those two revelations, I realize that the throne of God is the only permanent and enduring Kingdom. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. For, human kings, like the Caesars and the late Colonel Gadhafi, who claimed that title have all died. Their end affirms their temporal nature. Yet many continue to exalt themselves to their own doom. It makes me wonder if anybody understands that there is only one Sovereign King. His name is Jesus!

Over the course of history, upheavals like the Arab Spring have overthrown kings and presidents who have seen themselves as ultimate rulers of their nations. They heaved accolades on themselves and assumed titles that portrayed them as gods. Their words struck terror in the hearts of millions. Their commands sent many to their brutal end. They convinced themselves that they were invincible. They lived in fool’s paradise, by their defiance of God. But their end always revealed their humanity.

The truth is, God is the only sovereign ruler with an everlasting throne. He is God Almighty, the “I AM WHO I AM” who rules from heaven (Exodus 3:14). All power and authority come from Him and ends in Him (Rom. 11:36), and it is He who “humbles and exalts” (1 Sam. 2:7). He is the “God who judges: He brings one down, and He exalts another” (Ps. 75:7); “The Lord [who] sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground” (Ps. 147:6); the God who “changes times and seasons; He sets up kings and deposes them” (Dan. 2:21). If only men like the late Gadhafi could understand this, they would hold their positions of authority very loosely. The sad commentary is that they do not, and their end has always been brutal.

However, before we condemn the dictators of this world, let us remember that we’re just like them; for there is a throne we are occupying and are fighting to maintain control over our lives. It is called the heart. It is the throne of God in us, and He wants it back as our Lord and King. He could have wrestled it from us, but He has graciously given us the opportunity to willingly abdicate it to His Son, Jesus Christ. He stands at the door and knocks, waiting to come in and be your King, if you will open it to Him (Rev. 3:20).

So, will you get off the throne of your life for Christ to occupy and rule over you?
