Deuteronomy 29:29
New International Version (NIV)
The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.
For Meditation
- Do some things in this world baffle you?
- Do you hope you could understand them all?
- Have you asked God a lot of questions He has not responded to?
- Are you wondering why He is doing that to you?
- Has that heightened your anxiety and anguish?
- Why doesn’t God open things up for your understanding?
- Isn’t He the One who has said, “Though it cost all you have, get understanding” (Prov. 4:7)?
- Why, then, has He not revealed everything to you?
- Wouldn’t you be better off if you could understand everything that happens in your life, or if God would open the future to you?
- I know you are hurting because of what your spouse or boss or best friend did to you; but do you think knowing the “why” would settle your mind and give you peace?
- Do you think knowing why your loved one died in that terrible way or time would soothe your pain?
- Have you settled in your heart that God has not dealt well with you – that He has not been fair?
- Can you hear Him through this scripture: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever” (Deut. 29:29)?
- Does that make sense to you?
- So, can you trust Him who knows everything, and knows what’s best for you saying: “It’s my secret, child, and it’s best kept with me for now?”
I pray you will trust the Lord who kept the backstory of Job’s suffering from him, despite Job’s search for reason. For, you don’t want to hear God from the defense attorney’s seat when He begins to cross-examine you (Job 38:1-41:34).
Rather, be assured that God loves you and takes pleasure in you, despite your suffering. He has allowed it for a purpose you will only know yonder (1 Cor. 13:12). If God did not answer Jesus when He cried in agony from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” (Mk. 15:34), know that He has excellent reasons for keeping the “why” in your case as a secret to Himself.
May you, therefore, trust God and find peace amid your suffering, and His silence. And, may His grace suffice to carry you through today and forever, Amen!
Shalom
