Pretentious Listening

Matthew 13:13
New International Version (NIV)

This is why I speak to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

For Meditation
How true scripture is!
We pretend to listen to our spouses, but many times, our hearts are not attentive. It is not because we don’t hear or even participate in the discussion. Most of the time we do. The truth is, we may not be particularly interested in the subject. So, we pretend to listen just to pacify our dear spouse. And why not? Who doesn’t want peace?
Regrettably, we take the same attitude to the throne of grace in Bible study and prayer. We may be there physically, but our hearts may be far away from Him (Matt. 13:13). Why do we do that?
• Perhaps, we do not really want to know God that intimately.
• Maybe we fear what He will tell us
• Maybe we do not want to hear any dissenting voice; for God often contradicts our selfish ideas and opinions.
• Possibly, we love what we have so much that we do not want to give it up for anything.
• Or, we cannot bear the shame or disgrace that may come upon us, should God tell us to confess our sin to the person we have offended.
All these reveal a heart that is far away from God and disinterested in knowing Him. After all, nobody invests in something they find no value in. So, we keep our wealth, whatever it may be. For, the heart always gravitates toward our treasure trough (Matt. 6:21).
Consequently, God does not grant them the ability to understand, nor gives knowledge to such people. For, even though they look, they are disinterested in seeing to gain knowledge. Though they hear, they don’t really listen to understand.
Concerning God, their hearts are calloused.
O, how desirous our Father in heaven is for us to turn to Him for understanding and knowledge to grace our lives – the only way to know Him intimately.
Are you prepared to exchange your selfish attitude for a deeper and intimate knowledge and fellowship with Jesus today?
Shalom
