Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.
1 Kings 17:3-4
Isn’t God simply ridiculous, sometimes?
It’s amazing how He does things. His ways are unfathomable and His methods, mind-boggling. Some of the things He says sound ridiculous to even consider. Yet, His word is the only reality, truth, and just. The incredible word of God is creative, healing, fulfilling, and satisfying. Accepting it unreservedly is wisdom.
Consider His word to Elijah to go hide in the Kerith River, east of the Jordan (1 Kings 17:3). Can you believe that? How could God Almighty tell His prophet to run and hide from King Ahab, a mere human? Couldn’t He have protected Elijah? But that is one of the ridiculous ways of God by which He accomplishes His purposes and plan. And if you thought that was ludicrous, consider this promise: “You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there” (4). What! Birds to feed who? The last I checked, humans fed birds, not the other way around. But that’s one of the ludicrous ways of Jehovah.
That calls for faith. Such is the time when a good knowledge of God pays off. It requires calmness and discernment. For, that’s the only way to walk with God and receive grace for every situation. As it is written: “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Heb. 11:1), and, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (vs. 6).
Walk through the “Hall of Faith,” and you will see Him parade His faithful servants like Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua and many others, and be inspired by their knowledge of God. Their faith was their victory. For, they lived “by faith and not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7). And when you think you’ve seen it all, look at the cross on Calvary – the most ridiculous rescue strategy ever – and you will get my point.
Yours may be a different situation. God may do or tell you something different. It may seem ridiculous. Yet, it is true. He calls you to believe and experience His power in amazing ways. Don’t focus on the sound of it. Focus on the One who is the initiator and perfecter of your faith – Jesus Christ our Lord (Heb. 12:2). Bear through the pain for a little while longer; for He is full of surprises! Rather, train your ears to distinctly know His voice and be able to discern His word and His directions. When you do, just obey. Elevate your faith to the realms of the supernatural and experience God’s manifold blessings. He wants your name inscribed in the eternal Hall of faith.
