The Wonder!

The Birth Of Christ

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Luke 2:6-7

For Meditation

O, the wonder! Who ever thought they would hear the cry of the Almighty as a new-born baby? Who ever dreamt of holding Him, the one who holds the entire universe in His hands? The irony of it all!

But, there in Bethlehem, the city of David, down in a manger, the cry of infant Immanuel fills the air. A young woman, Mary, holds Almighty God in her bosom – tiny and helpless; His umbilical cord dangling like any ordinary baby. Wonder of wonders!

Gazing in his wide-opened eyes, she whispers, “You are mine, and I will take care of you.” His face lights up; a gentle breeze sweeping through the manger. A contradiction of roles!

Omnipotent takes His first earthly bath on human lap; human hands, caressing His infant body. Hear Him cry, baby Jesus, as Mary wraps her first-born in swaddling clothes, and lays Him in the manger.

Look on Him now, the Alpha and Omega in human flesh; eyes shut in deep sleep. When did the One who watches over Israel, sleep or slumber? But there He is, fast asleep in the cradle, with little lambs surrounding Him. Calm and at peace, with the tender eyes of a youthful mother – still in awe – watching and wondering. The mystery of mysteries!

Now awake, His mouth open in anxious expectation; His first earthly meal to receive. The great Provider, now depending on His creation to feed Him. Watch Him suck and nimble at the breast of His virgin mother and be amazed. How could it be?

But it’s true. Immanuel – God is with us. The mystery of all ages.

Merry Christmas!
