Desperate Times

Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.

2 Chronicles 20:12

Sometimes the Lord reveals the powerlessness of the human race in unusual ways. This is one of such moments. The world is helpless against this coronavirus and very desperate for a cure. Cut it however you may, God has affirmed His Sovereign power over the world by the fear, uncertainty, and devastation the pandemic has rained on the world since December 2019.

One lesson stands out for the world in all of this. We are powerless without the mercy and grace of God! For, if we had intelligence of our own, we would have come up with a cure immediately after the virus hit. We would have found a vaccine quickly.

Look in the faces of people in the airport queues, desperately waiting to get back to their homes in their countries before their borders close. Observe the helplessness of health workers struggling to help the infected. Listen to politicians digging into their deep bag of lies and deception to confuse the poor citizen. Watch the news commentators and “experts” on TV doing their best to reassure a panicked audience. Consider these, and you can only conclude that we are the most vulnerable and pathetic because of our pride and rejection of God.

But God is merciful. He will forgive our sins, as the church cries to Him to remember mercy in wrath (Hab. 3:2). He will graciously command the angel who is afflicting the world like He did at the time of David’s sin in counting his mighty men: “Enough! Withdraw your hand” (2 Sam. 24:16). He will, by grace, open the eyes of whoever finds the cure the world so desperately seeks for the pandemic to prevent the infection of many other people; particularly, women and children in vulnerable countries in the third world. God knows scientists will take the glory for the cure and vaccine. Yet, for the elects’ sake, He will do it, though He shares His glory with no one (Isa. 48:11). God has heard the cry of the church, and He will be timely with His intervention.

So, like the men of Issachar, understand the times and know what the church should do (1 Chron. 12:32)–to give glory to Jesus.

Maranatha!
