Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

For Meditation
The images are still fresh in my mind from my children’s Sunday School picture book. A little boy with a pouch on his side, running towards an imposing figure, dressed in an almost impregnable armor. The next picture depicts the impact of the stone shot from his sling between the eyes of the giant. And the third, the giant sprawled across the entire page, with the little boy standing over him in victory. Amazing!
That is the incredible story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17:12-54).
Today, I want to immortalize that imagery as you, the fearless child of God, who stands in the name of Jesus to confront and overcome the giant in your life.
Picture it in your mind. See the giant in your life and feel the terror of its size and armory. Hear his intimidating words. But more than that. Sense the anger erupting in your belly.
“Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (26).
Power and courage surge in you. You leap to your feet and put on the full armor of God, rejecting the armor of men they offer you. You pull out an appropriate word of God from your heart and confront that terrorist in your life. The giant scorns. You are not deterred.
“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (45).
The enemy moves in for the kill, screaming his blasphemies. But you are not intimidated. Filled with the Holy Spirit, you declare your faith and confidence in the name of Jesus. Now, like David, you run toward the battle line and speak the word of God against the enemy giant. The Holy Spirit directs the word toward the right target. The giant comes down with a big fall like that of Humpty Dumpty.
That is the way to slay the giants in your life Christian!
Have faith in the matchless name of Jesus (Phil. 2:10). Do not be intimidated by the forces of darkness around you. Speak the word of God against them and claim your victory in Jesus.
As the third stanza of Martin Luther’s hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” based on Psalm 46 declares:
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us;
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him. (Emphasis mine)
So, do you have a stone in your bag? Shalom
