“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him –
John 18:38
When Jesus speaks, the truth stands before you. You cannot turn it any other way. Either you embrace Him and be free or deny Him and continue in your torment.
Pilate knew the truth. He knew the Jewish leaders were lying about Jesus. He knew they were jealous of Jesus, and that they had no case to merit the time before him (Jn. 18:29-30). Yet, he gave them an audience anyway.
“Are you the king of the Jews? … What have you done? … You are a king, then!” … “What is truth?”
Jesus’s responses interrogated Pilate rather than his questions interrogating Jesus (34, 36, 37b). The truth stared Pilate in the face, and he struggled.
Sounds familiar?
Pilate’s problem was himself, just as we all are sometimes. We struggle to face the truth and to admit it.
So, there it was. The truth put on trial before a human judge, who did not know what to do because he was sitting in the seat of the Man who stood trial before him – the Truth.
You see, the truth is a Person. His name is Jesus (Jn. 14:6). He is the One you struggle every day to judge – the cause of your misery. For:
- Every person who opposes Him is fake and a liar.
- Every story or proposition not conforming to His word is a lie.
- Every promise not made on His foundation is vain.
- Every desire for anything else but Him is deceptive
There is only one truth that liberates – the Man Jesus Christ.
Either we embrace Him and live or reject Him for whatever reason and sentence ourselves to death.
It is a choice we must make every moment of our life.
