If God Said It

What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and you’re your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you? –

Genesis37:10

His eyes were starry and bright, filled with childlike expectation. He needed to share the wonder of his dream with somebody. His only friends were his brothers, but they had snubbed him the first time he confided in them. When Joseph discussed his first dream with his brothers, they hated him even more (Gen. 37:5-8). So, this time, he decided to talk to his father, expecting some encouragement and prayer. After all, his dad was a dreamer in his youth. Jacob had often shared his encounters with God in dreams and how they had helped him through the difficult periods of his life. How then could Joseph have expected the strong rebuke from him?

“What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers come and bow down to the ground before you?” (Gen. 37:10)

Several years later, in the capital city of the greatest empire of that time, a young man is hastily prepared and hurried from prison and brought before the Pharaoh to interpret two dreams that none of his wise men and magicians could interpret (41:14). The chief cupbearer of Pharaoh now remembers the “young Hebrew” he shared prison with, who had interpreted his dream for him (9). Though Joseph had asked him to appeal to Pharaoh on his behalf (40:14-15), the chief cupbearer had forgotten him (23).

The good news is that people may forget you, but God will not. Never, ever! Now Pharaoh needs interpretation of his dreams, and God has perfectly orchestrated Joseph’s elevation to the King’s Court (28-38).

God is the One who determines everything in our lives. So, even in our disappointments, we should never despair. We must always remember that God is in every situation of our lives and that He works everything together for our good and His glory (Rm. 8:18).

The Holy Spirit reveals the dream to Joseph and adds an elaborate plan of action to counter the severest drought the world would soon experience. The King puts Joseph in charge of the nation as Prime Minister to manage the proposal he has suggested (39-43). Isn’t God good?

The drought hits, and the entire world descends on Egypt for food. Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt to buy food as everybody else did. Through a series of events, Joseph reunites with his family. He becomes their breadwinner and host for the rest of their lives. His two dreams, thirteen years earlier, has come to pass because God had so determined it by divine orchestration.

If God has decreed something for you, it will surely come to pass. The world can fight against it. People can laugh and sneer, and the devil can do his worst. But God! He always has the last word. He can uphold His word and make it prosper in His time.

As He says in Isaiah 46:11, “Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it”.

That is the testimony of Joseph’s life for you today.
