Please, Don’t Do It!

So, she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”

Genesis 16:2

For Meditation

Please, do not do it!

God has not forgotten you. Wait for Him who promised. He is El Shaddai – God Almighty (Gen. 17:1). There is nothing He cannot do. He does not change (Num. 23:19). He will be faithful to His promise.

Does it seem like an eternity for its fulfillment? Remember 2 Peter 3:9 and Psalm 90:4 and wait. He told Habakkuk, “…Though it lingers, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay” (Habakkuk 2:3).

The waiting period tries your patience but builds your faith in God. It prepares you to handle what He has promised you better. The promise is timely and appropriate for its purpose. Like wine, it gets better with time and produces much delight when it manifests. You value what you have waited for and are thankful to the Lord when it comes.

 Sarah could not wait any longer, despite the firm promise of God. She needed a child, but she was past child-bearing age. Abraham could not resist her offer of her young maid in his arms. The rest is history. The entire world is left holding the bag since then. If only the consequences of our impatience were limited to us alone!

So, reject the sinful offer, and wait for God. He knows what He is doing.

But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint. Shalom
