When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:1:41
For Meditation
Two women, two generations, needing each other. None of them expected to be in their situation. Elizabeth, the older of the two, and beyond child-bearing age, was now carrying, and in her sixth month. Mary, her relative and virgin, was to bear Baby Jesus. They were both stunned by angel Gabriel with the announcement of their conceptions. What was humanly impossible was happening to them, and they needed each other to confirm their story and affirm each other.
So, heaven arranged their rendezvous in the hill country of Judea, where Elizabeth lived. At the sound of the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in Elizabeth’s womb. The forerunner had met the mother of the Messiah while in the mother’s womb, and he rejoiced. The Holy Spirit overwhelmed Elizabeth and Mary, and they both spoke under His inspiration 9Lk. 1:39-56).
For the next three months, they will need each other. What they talked about is for our knowledge in heaven. But for now, we can only rejoice with them and praise the Lord for His gift to us in the two babies they bore.
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, let us ponder over the story of Elizabeth and Mary. It is a reminder that we need one another to encourage ourselves in our Christian journey. “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds … encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Heb. 10:24-25).
