But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

 Why is it so difficult to follow simple instructions? Maybe simple things are not so simple after all. Make an issue a little complicated, and people will do everything to obey its convoluted narrative and demands.

The instructions from the Lord needed no explanation. “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” (Gen. 19:17). That was the mercy of God extended to Lot and his family when He was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. And you thought they would run with vigor for their lives?

Despite the spiritual bankruptcy of Sodom and Gomorrah, its wealth captivated Lot. The mountains were too far from the economic center of the Plains of Jordan for him. So, he pleaded for a small town near the doomed twin-city for a refuge. His excuse was so ridiculous to consider, but God’s favor and kindness prevailed on his behalf (18-22).

Then there was Lot’s wife. She could not believe the family wealth they had left behind. Will the Lord spare some of it for her from the inferno? So, disregarding the Lord’s instructions, Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt (26). Unbelievable!

Losing one’s privileges and wealth is difficult to bear. Like Lot’s wife, many people disregard the warnings of rescue workers and perish in disasters. Others have taken alternative advantages and missed God’s cover and blessings, as Lot did. The stakes are higher these days, and the temptation, stronger.

But can you break free from the unhealthy spiritual conditions of 2020, as wealthy as they may be? Can you forget what God has called you away from in the past year and press on toward the goal to win the upward prize for which God has called you heavenward in Christ Jesus? (Phil. 3:13-14). Are you struggling with it?

Why don’t you continue to look to Jesus for inspiration, guidance, and strength through this new year? Remember, you have chosen Him as your Mentor and Guide.
