How Did You Get Here?

But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.

Revelation 2:4-5

For Meditation

What happened?

You fell head over heels in love when you first met. He was your first love, and you confessed He was all that you desired and longed for in life. So, how did you get here?

  • Remember your zeal and enthusiasm at your conversion—your devotion times, scripture memorization, the Bible studies, the prayer meetings, the service at church?
  • Do you remember the joy you had then, those first years after Christ took hold of you—the peace you had, the confidence, the assurance of victory, the trust, the patience, and the integrity you maintained in everything?
  • Don’t you miss them? I mean, don’t you miss those days when you enjoyed fellowship with the Lord and other believers?
  • What happened to you? What changed?
  • Why have you replaced that joy with this counterfeit happiness and deceptive spirituality?
  • Can you turn back like the Prodigal Son and come back to fellowship with Christ? He is waiting for you.

Pray with me.

Lord, I am on my face before you. Forgive me for turning your love for me into a child’s play—a pretentious love affair without substance. Forgive me, Lord, and restore me. As David prayed, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me” (Ps. 51:12).

Amen!
