Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “You go first, for there are many of you. Choose one of the bulls and prepare it and call on the name of your god. But do not set fire to the wood.”
1 Kings 18:25
For Meditation
Numbers do not count with God. What matters is a steadfast heart devoted to Him and His holiness. God does not need an army to display His glory. He does not depend on the roar of the multitude. The lonesome voice of a faithful saint is more than enough.
Many times, we feel overwhelmed with the sheer numbers of our opposers. They swarm around like killer bees and drive us to take cover. Stepping away from everything godly and fearful that our identity may deny us some privileges and recognition in high places, we blend with the crowd and live defeated. But our God is not a wimp.
Baal had four hundred and fifty prophets, together with four hundred prophets of Asherah, on Mt. Carmel. But the Lord had one committed prophet representing Him in the contest. Baal proved to be a dead god. He could not respond to his prophets (1 Kings 18:25-29). But God! He prevailed! (36-38).
“The fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice (38).”
God is alive and responsive to His dedicated servants who stand against the pervading idolatry and moral decadence of our day. Of course, we do not contend as the world does. Whenever we become like them, we betray our identity as representatives of our gentle and humble Savior (Matt. 11:29), the chosen Servant of God (12:17-21).
The weapons of our warfare, our way of life (2 Cor. 6:7; Eph. 6:10-18), have divine power to dismantle strongholds (2 Cor. 10:4). We deploy them by standing boldly against the rising tide of evil in our time, sacrificed on the altar of God, and bearing spiritual fruit that brings glory to the Father in Christ Jesus (Gal. 5: 22-23). Amen!
