Because You Gave

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ JesusPhilippians 4:19

For meditation

“My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). What a blessing to a generous, giving church! But what drew this glorious promise from the apostle to the gentiles?

Paul commended the Philippians for participating with him in the ministry of giving and receiving. He praised the Philippians for being the only church that shared with Him when he went to Macedonia” (15) and for continuing to send him aid when he fell in need in Thessalonica (16). Impressed by their giving, the apostle characterizes it as an acceptable offering pleasing to God (18).

When we give to support missions, we impress God. He is the ultimate Giver, and we become more like Him. Mindful of this, Paul assured the Philippians that God would meet all their needs by the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus (19).

Anytime our giving touches the heart of God, He opens His treasury and graces our lives by the measure of His bounty.

The condition of our hearts impresses God when we give more than the offering itself. Though God loves our willing and cheerful giving, He prefers obedience to it (1 Samuel 15:22). Reverence and honor are the keys to the heart of God, and obedience acknowledges Him overflowing giving in His Son.

Some people have made this beautiful promise a wicked license to defraud others to their peril. God is not a lottery agent. He blesses according to His sovereignty, and it is always an outflow of His grace.

May you never tire of giving to the work of God. He is faithful to His promise to meet all your needs at all times. Again, may the Bank of Heaven open to receive the deposit of your generosity and credit your eternal account in Christ Jesus, as you continue to give to His work (17; Matt. 6:20).
