Song of Songs 1:15-16
New International Version (NIV)
He
How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes are doves.
She
How handsome you are, my beloved!
Oh, how charming!
And our bed is verdant.
For meditation
- Hello handsome! Did you gaze into your wife’s eyes this morning and, with a loving voice, say to her, “How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves” (Songs of Solomon 1:15)?
- Hi Beautiful! Did you look back into your husband’s eyes this morning and, with a touch of sweetness, say to him, “How handsome you are, my beloved! Oh, how charming! And our bed is verdant” (16)? Do you do this, or your own expression/gesture of love, often? How naturally does it come to you? (I repent o!)
- Were such not the first words that flowed from Adam’s lips when he awoke from his God-induced sleep to find beautiful Eve by her side (Gen. 2:23)? Was that not the reason God gave for the man to leave his father and mother and united with his wife to become one flesh (24)? Was there not mutual admiration between the husband and wife (25)? Remember, they were naked and felt no shame.
- However, do you remember what sin did to that beautiful relationship? “The woman you put here with me—she…” said Adam (3:12). “The serpent deceived me, and I…” beautiful Eve said to God (13). But remember, that was then; this is now!
- Don’t you know Jesus has bruised the head of the serpent and freed us from the sin that destroys intimacy and freezes our marriages (Rm. 6:6-7)? So, why don’t you allow intimacy and mutual admiration for each other, heal your marriage? Would it not be nice to permit Jesus to walk you back into that beautiful Garden where His Presence lives?
I pray that in whatever offense you commit against each other as couples, you will remember that sin has no control over you anymore.
So, may you not allow your offenses to stop you from looking at yourselves with the same admiration and love you had on your wedding day. Instead, may you still be able to say to each other, “How beautiful you are, my darling” / “How handsome you are, my lover!” And may your mutual admiration, loving gestures and compliments to each other, thaw any coldness that may have come between you and your spouse today, for God’s glory in Christ Jesus, amen!
