THAT IS WHY HE CAME

Luke 10:40

New Living Translation

But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

For Meditation

That is not the problem, Martha, and you know it. You have issues—many of them (Luke 10:41). Have you not prayed for this moment with the Lord? And now He is here—in your home. Jesus did not come for your service, as desirable as that may be. He came instead to serve you. He came in answer to your heart’s cry.

The Lord did not come for Mary. He came because of you—for your cares. The All-knowing and compassionate God has taken time to stop at your home. The impression is not what He seeks (40). Your welfare is His concern. Your mental and emotional health matters to Him so much that He stopped to heal you—to soothe your pain and relieve your anxiety. You cannot pretend before the Master. The facade cannot deceive Him. So, why don’t you come clean and lay them all on Him?

Yes, you are a hospitable woman, and Jesus knows that too. Your culinary skills are public knowledge, and people love to stop by for visits. But as much as the Master appreciates that about you, He is here for what no one else can do for you. They all come to take from you, but He is here to minister to you—grace in overflowing measure. Your visitors do not know the condition of your heart, but Jesus knows and cares too. More than that. He has the cure for you.

Do you see how your issues with your sister have flared up rudely and embarrassingly? Do you think she is your problem now? Don’t you recognize her calm at my feet and the glow in her eyes? Is that not what you seek? So why don’t you come and sit down and let us have an intimate conversation? I am here for you, my dear Martha!

The Master calls out today:

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and, I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Come—you reader—this morning, to the Master who waits to carry your burdens. You are the reason He went to Calvary, and He has stopped today at your house. He has come to your home for a celebrity therapy session with you.

So, leave everything and come up to sit at His feet and have some rest for your wearied soul.
