But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her—2 Kings 4:30.
She did not ask for any favors when she hosted Elisha whenever he came by (2 Kings 4:10). It was just an act of hospitality. When the man of God raised her hopes for a son, she protested (16). She became pregnant anyway, and her son became her delight.
The servants rush in with her son. The child is sick, and his father does not even care. What is she supposed to do? Carrying the boy helplessly on her lap, the Shunammite woman rocks her son till he dies at noon (20). The man of God is in trouble. In bitterness of heart, she mounts her donkey and heads for Mount Carmel.
“Did I ask you for a son, my lord? Did I not tell you not to raise my hope?”
Elisha sends Gehazi with his staff to run ahead and raise the boy. But the Shunammite will not have it. The anointing to raise the boy is not on Gehazi, but on you, Elisha. So get up and come with me to bring my child back to life (30).
That is the heart of a mother – a heart that will not rest until her child is well and safe from all trouble. A mother cries with her baby. She groans when her child is sick and is not warm until her child is warm and well-fed. Until she has comfortably tucked her daughter in and is sound asleep, a mother will not sleep.
Observe the heart of a mother through Hagar with her dying son in the wilderness of Beersheba. The water in the bottle runs out. She puts the boy under the bush and sits a distance away from him. Hagar cannot watch the boy die. And as she sat there, she sobbed (Gen. 21:16).
Come to the court of King Solomon. Feel the heart of a mother as the sword threatens the life of her child (1 Kings 3:16-27). She cries out,
“Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” (26).
Journey through the day with the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:10-31. Let her captivate you by the purity of a mother’s heart for her family.
And finally, experience the pain a mother endures through the treasury of Mary’s heart (Lk. 2:19, 51). Walk with a mother through her heartaches when our Lord Jesus Christ stood trial before Pilate. Feel with Mary as Christ carries His cross through the streets of Jerusalem. And on Golgotha when the spikes tore through His hands.
A mother’s heart is as pure as gold!
So, do not wait till this special day to appreciate your mother. Every day is fitting for appreciation. Love them and let them feel special.
Happy Mother’s Day
