Blasphemy!

Matthew 12:31-32

New International Version

And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

For Meditation

I dared not say, “No” to your unfailing love—for all you have done for me.

Sliding down fast into the pit of hell, unrestrained, yet unaware of the danger my unbelief posed to me, you came into my life. Your love found me, and you threw me a lifeline—grace to rescue me.

Even when I hesitated, unsure of the strength of your lifeline to hold me fast, you gave me faith to believe. What a Savior! What demonstration of your unconditional love (Romans 5:8)?

You lifted my eyes to see the blood-stained wooden cross on which they nailed your Son—the place where I belonged. On Him, God laid the punishment that was mine.

I heard His groaning—the agony of His excruciating pain. His cry for water fell on deaf ears—the Creator of all the rivers on this planet could not have a little of it to soothe His parched throat—all because of me.

How then could I say no to your call to grab the lifeline and come to you? Your Spirit was too convincing to pass up on the heavenly deal—my sin for your grace that has saved me (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Saying no would have been blasphemy—a slap in your face.

That was the warning you gave those Pharisees who said you healed the blind and mute man by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons (Matthew 12:24). Poor souls! How wrong they were—their egos condemning them. Their blunder bordered on the unpardonable sin—a condemnation of themselves to an eternity outside your blissful presence.

It is high treason for anybody to focus on the pursuits of this life and say no to the high call of your redeeming grace. Should I have done that, I would have offended your love for your Son and all He sacrificed for me. I would have gazed on the abundance of your mercy and love and declared them needless. What an insult that would have been! Unpardonable sin and blasphemous! Yet, many have set their hearts on that fatal error.

Thank you, Lord Holy Spirit, for your convicting power that melted my stony heart. For that is why I am who I am now in Christ Jesus—saved and heaven-bound.

So, I say to you who have seen the glory of God in Christ Jesus, but have dug your heels deep in unbelief, think again! Appeal to wisdom and take God’s lifeline for your redemption. As the Psalmist says:

“Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you be destroyed in your way, for His wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in [Christ Jesus]”—Psalm 2:11-12.
