A Dangerous Attitude

Deuteronomy 5:27

New King James Version

You go near and hear all that the Lord our God may say, and tell us all that the Lord our God says to you, and we will hear and do it.’

For Encouragement

The Israelites leaders could not stand hearing the voice of God that came from the fire and smoke on Mount Sinai. So, they chose Moses as an intermediary for hearing from God (Deut. 6:23-27). They lost the personal intimacy God desired with them.

Through Christ, however, God has restored this personal intimacy to believers. He has given us the ministry of the Holy Spirit for a personal relationship in His word. Despite this great privilege, many still prefer hearing Him only through intermediaries, like pastors and teachers.

However, they miss the truth that the quality time we devote to studying and enjoying personal devotions with the Lord is also essential and nourishing (Acts 17:11).

Why then do people feel uncomfortable hearing directly from God?

Some may argue on the side of limited time. Others may postulate that they do not have the literary ability of others for proper understanding. They will be quick to point to Ephesian 4:11-13 for support. However, our sinful lifestyles tower above every other excuse. Adam and Eve instruct us best on this one. Denying the cause of one’s sickness could be more dangerous than the sickness itself. The best healing comes from owning up to it and determining to seek a change of attitude.

May the Lord heal and purify us from our sinful ways and make us feel comfortable sitting at His feet to hear from form Him through the Holy Spirit, our ultimate Teacher.

Shalom
