How Can We Thank Him Enough?

Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.

1 Chronicles 29:13

Once again, thanksgiving Sunday is here with us. Our hearts are brimming with an appreciation of all the things God has done for us. But how can we thank God enough? How can our offering be enough to thank Him appreciably?

When we consider His creation—the sun, the moon, the billions of stars in the constellation, and the other planets the eyes cannot see, how majestic are His works, and His fingers that set them all in place (Psalm 8:3)? They run their courses with perfect precision at His command, and none escapes His keen attention. What a powerful and artistic Creator that He is. How can we thank Him enough?

When we consider the vegetation and the seed-bearing plants and trees, with their fruits according to their various kinds—created by the power of His word (Genesis 1:11-12)—that we may have nourishment for our bodies. What a colorful and generous Creator that He is. How can we thank Him enough?

He set the seasons and times to mark our years here on earth to make life joyful and transitory. He gave orders to the morning and showed the dawn its place (Job 38:12-13). The sun will rise and dance its course every day, and the moon will follow its trail like the bride and her maids after her beloved. The moonlight follows the day. What a caring God He is! How can we thank Him enough?

When He created the sea and its mighty oceans, He shut it behind doors, fixed its limits, and set its doors and bars in place (8-11). ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt,” He said. Many creatures swim their path (Genesis 1:20). What a mighty God He is! How can we thank Him enough?

He spoke the birds into being (20b), colorful and magnificent, endowed with sweet, melodious voices to praise Him in ceaseless singing. He commanded the land to produce living creatures—wild animals and livestock—all of them according to their kinds (24). What a kind and caring God He is! And how can we thank Him enough?

He created humans in His image and likeness to fellowship with Him and glorify Him with perfect obedience (Genesis 1:27; 3:16-17). In rebellion, we rewarded Him by transgressing His law (3:6-7). Yet His anger did not slay us. His compassion trumped His wrath. He graciously clothed us with garments of skin to cover our nakedness (21), as He looked forward to the day He would clothe us with His righteousness in Christ Jesus (Romans 3:21-22). Moved by His love, His mercy and grace kissed on the cross of Calvary and rescued us from the dominion of darkness, bringing us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. It is in Him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:13-14). What more can we say? How can we thank Him—enough?

Gentiles with no covenant of promise with Him, we did not have any part in Christ. With no hope and God in this world, God had doomed us to death in hell (Ephesians 2:12; Romans 6:23). His grace, however, has given us the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). What a glorious day that will be!

The best part is for all of us, the crown of righteousness we will receive from the righteous Judge—Christ Jesus our Lord (2 Timothy 4:7-8; 1 Thessalonians 4: 15:17). What a loving and compassionate God He is! How can we thank Him enough?

So, Lord our God, receive our offering today and let our dancing gladden your heart. And may your favor overshadow us all the days of our lives, for Jesus’ sake, amen!

Happy Thanksgiving Sunday!
