Ready to Dine With the King?

Luke 14:18

New Living Translation

But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’

For Meditation

They received the invitation to the grand banquet—a time to sit with their host to dine, rest and refresh. However, they were too busy with other things when the banquet time came. They all gave excuses and went about their businesses—putting little value on the invitation. They had become self-sufficient in their engagements—a new field to inspect, some new oxen to try out on the farm, a marriage to nurture (Lk. 14:18-20).

So off they went, each to their private engagements—self-sufficient in their ways, needing the provision of no one, including God.

It was not so with the needy in the streets and alleys. They were the burdened, tired, and helpless bunch who could use the visitation and benevolence of the Lord. So, hurriedly, they went and took their seats—knowing they were undeserving, unable to throw such a party for themselves, and with no means to buy their way to the sumptuous banquet.

The personal question for the day is where you stand with these two groups of people. Are you self-sufficient, self-made, and so busy that you think you do not need anybody’s charity? Where does it place you with God?

The needy, however, look to God for everything and seek Him in every situation. Their hope is in God alone, and He meets them at the point of their needs. The Beatitudes are their consolation and eternal blessing.

May your heart find joy in the invitation of the Lord to His banquet every day—a rehearsal for the grand one in heaven!

Shalom
