Waiting for the Appointed Time

Habakkuk 1:13

New International Version

Your eyes are too pure to look at evil;
    you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.
Why then do you tolerate the treacherous?
    Why are you silent while the wicked
    swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

For Meditation

He complained to God about the evil in his society (Hab. 1:1-4). God responded with His plan to take care of things (5-11). But Habakkuk protested. He could not believe the way God was going to deal with it. God is too pure to tolerate the wicked nation of Babylon to punish His people, Israel, Habakkuk complained (13).

How like Habakkuk we are!

We get frustrated about certain things in our homes, jobs, society, world, or wherever. Yes, those things are evil, so we go to God in prayer, seeking His justice to prevail. God rolls out His plan to address the issue, but we don’t like it. He did not do it our way.

We will never get to know and receive our peace until we learn to wait and allow God some space to act in His way and on His terms—not ours. That is the only time we can see His glory and smile.

God told Habakkuk to wait for the appointed time for the revelation. It may tarry, but by His word, it shall surely come and will not delay (2:3).

Let us learn to wait on Him no matter how difficult it is and learn to hear from Him. However, don’t expect Him to hear from Him only in the wind, or earthquake, or fire. He will surprise you with a gentle whisper. In the calmness of your waiting, God will speak and direct (1 Kings 19:11-12).
