Work and Happiness

Colossians 3:23

New International Version

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

For Meditation

Charles Kingsley was right when he said, “Thank God every morning when you get up that you have something to do which must be done, whether or not you like it. Being forced to work and forced to do your best will breed in you temperance, self-control, diligence, strength of will, content, and a hundred other virtues which the idle never know.”

Do you want to know what that is? GRACE! The unmerited favor of God. To wake up this morning with gainful work to do, an office to walk into, and a church to serve in, is a blessing from the Almighty God, my friend. Millions have nothing to call their work, and they find it killing. But you have one, so rejoice in Christ, who is your provider.

Joseph could have hated his work as a slave in the house of Potiphar, but he thanked the Lord he was alive and gave his all to his work. He had God to glorify, so he poured his heart into it. The favor of God lifted him before his master, and you know the rest of the story.

Can you do the same today and let it become your habit? Paul wrote in Colossians 3:23 that “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Your boss is not your employer. God is He who signs your check.

Is your boss a tough person? Look past him and fix your gaze on Jesus, drawing strength from Him to do it joyfully and in a manner pleasing to Him.

May the Lord bless and strengthen you to enjoy your work today, giving thanks to Him. May He touch you and give you His peace in Christ, amen!

Shalom
