“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so, they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves”—Genesis 3:6-7.
How devastating was the fall in the Garden of Eden?
It was so bad; that the first couple hid from God. The fall was so damaging that the first family began disintegrating as Cain murdered Abel in cold blood (Gen. 4:8). It triggered a chain of selfish actions that made God sick to the stomach, moving Him to express His regret for creating humans (6:6).
Check the absurdity of immoral behavior and depravity that blinded the people at the time of Noah to the impending floods. They mocked Noah, a preacher of righteousness for one hundred and twenty years, as he built the ark, the only means of escape from the looming destruction.
The people laughed and asked, Who needs your ship, Noah? After all, how much water could God possibly amass to deluge the entire world?
Talk about foolish paralysis. The folks displayed it competitively and showcased their idiocy in a prize-winning stupor. So, heaven’s floodgate opened with vengeful fury, and the earth vomited out and sweep away, in disgust, every living creature (7:17-24). That is how debased and destructive the human fall in Eden.
After the Ararat landing (8:4), the world should have been better, right? But no! Like Humpty Dumpty, the Adamic fall was so bad that nothing could put humankind together.
Soon, the disintegration started when Papa Noah, having had too much of the wine to wash down his lunch, snored away in a disgraceful slumber, displaying his essentials. That amused young Ham, who called his brothers to see the Oldman’s nakedness. Canaan, Ham’s son, would suffer the brunt of Grandpa Noah’s angry curse (9:25).
Are you still doubtful that the fall of Eden was irreparable? Take a trip to Babel. Observe the unfolding display of the Lucifer spirit. They claimed they too deserved to make a name for themselves, like God. So, they began the ascent to heaven—to be like God! Seeking equality with God was their sole goal. The serpent said they could be, but God didn’t love them enough to let them into His secret. Now they tried it (11:3-4). But can any challenge the Almighty and have his way?
Gomer tried to address the issue, but nobody could understand him anymore. Raama stood to explain something, but none could comprehend him either. Confusion broke out, and each person took their family and left to find their region of residence.
I told you the fall was so bad like that of Humpty Dumpty, didn’t I!
From righteous Abraham to Isaac and Jacob, all displayed the Adamic death. The Egypt Rescue of Israel held great promise for the world, but soon all the laws and sacrificial cleansing could not offer humanity new life. God was still far away. All over the world, sin continued its devastation. Wars abounded, and wickedness increased even as humans became more intelligent and sophisticated, until heaven intervened.
God sent His Son to the rescue, but the tragedy of the people who refused to listen to Noah repeated itself. The people mocked Jesus and finally murdered Him on the cross. He rose and ascended to heaven, opening the door to all who will believe in Him and receive his gracious gift of life. But as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:18:
“The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor. 1:18).
God is patient so that all may repent. The church doors are still open to the repentant soul, but for how long? All other options are repair work that cannot hold. A new birth is what you need, and it is only available in Chris Jesus (Jn. 3:3; 1:12-13; Rm. 10:9-10, 13).
