To All Mothers

Mother kissing and hugging her baby.

Her children rise up and call her blessed – Proverbs 31:28

Yes, I know it is not Mother’s Day. Yet I pause here to celebrate all mothers who take your femininity seriously as God created you and glorify Him in your role as a mother.

Most precious are you who conceived and brought us forth. You are the beauty and the life of this earth. What would the world be without you?

The Lord created you uniquely. Removed from a man’s rib, He crafted you – from the bone that protects the heart of Adam, the Lord God Almighty brought you forth. You are one of a kind, mother, and there will be none like you, ever – a breath of fresh air in His creation.

When God brought you to Adam, his eyes beheld the most magnificent work of His hands yet. He held you in his eyes. His mouth dropped as his brain searched for words. Not able to control it anymore, he exclaimed with amazement,

“[You are] bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” (Gen. 2:23).

How wonderful are you who moved the man to make his first confession? How celebrated is the union with the man when God held your tender hands and joined you in holy matrimony to Adam for life? The one who did not have a “suitable helper” (vs. 20b) received the best of God’s creation. You brought companionship and strength to Adam.

With love, you carried your children for nine months. Through all the pain and discomfort, you joyfully bore them. Your breast became the fountain of life that nourished every child of yours. With tender hands, you cleaned, bathed, and dressed them as the sweet melody of your voice filled the air. When their little eyes caught yours, O, what loving assurance you communicated to them.

Your heart followed each child through every stage of their life. You caught their first giggle and heard their first word ever spoken.

You held your child’s hands through their first steps, cuddling them when they fell and hurt themselves. Your eyes followed them to the neighborhood playgrounds, always ready to come to their aid when a bully threatened. You rejoiced in taking them to school every day and helping them with their homework. They saw the world through your eyes, and with your timeless teaching, you groomed them. Even though they have made their home away from you, you have never ceased to cover them with your heartfelt and passionate prayers that have seen them through their lives.

On behalf of every child you raised, thank you, sweet mother, for all you have done for us. We will hold on to the most beautiful gift you ever gave us, Jesus Christ, who is our life.

I celebrate you today with all your children and pray to the Lord Jesus to shower you with His favor and bring you joy in every circumstance in your life.
