Do You Know Who He Is?

Mark 1:24

New King James Version

“What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

For Meditation

Jesus had just started His ministry after His baptism. He went to Capernaum and taught in the synagogue in a way that amazed the people. Nobody had taught them with such authority before—certainly not the teachers of the law. As they mused, a tormented voice rang out: “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” (Mark 1:24).

The demons that possessed this poor man recognized Jesus. They knew they were in trouble and that Jesus came to set those they held captives free (Luke 4:18). So, the evil spirit in the man called Jesus out. “I know who you are—the Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24).

At His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended on Him as Jesus came up out of the water, and a voice came from heaven:

“You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (11).

The Father knows His Son. The Son knows who He is, and the Holy Spirit intimately knows the second person in the Trinity. However, the people Jesus came to set free did not know His identity. He sat and taught them in a new and authoritative way, but they did not recognize Him. What a pity!

The question today is: Do you know Him, who died to save you and rose to give you eternal life in Him? Are you sure you know Him that well?

I pray that as Paul prayed for the Ephesians, “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better…” (Ephesians 1:17-21).

Shalom
