Matthew 20:15
New International Version
Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’
For Meditation
He came expecting more than the last person hired. What shocking news greeted him—the same wages for him as for the person who came last!
No! That is not fair! I worked longer hours than him. He just worked the last few hours of the day, he protested.
The master responded,
I reserve the right to pay each person the same amount, for that is what each of you signed for, so do not let that disturb you, pal. However, if you want me to treat you fairly—give you what you deserve — maybe Michael can show you the wages of sin — hell! That is not what you are asking for, are you?
The good news is that God has treated us more than we deserve — more than reasonable. It is called grace. As the hymn writer rejoices in these lyrics:
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind but now I see.
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come
This grace that brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home
When we’ve been here ten thousand years
Bright, shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun
So, rejoice with the criminal on the cross, you, who came into the kingdom in your childhood. For that is how you can enjoy the full blessings of the kingdom of God here on earth and beyond when He comes.
Shalom.
