John 1:50
New International Version
Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
For Meditation
Every day is a marvel with Jesus. He opens Himself to us in portions we can handle and enjoy, thus growing into His likeness each day.
Canaan was too big for the Israelites to occupy at once. God, in His infinite wisdom, did not drive out the inhabitants of the land at a go, but gave to the Israelites in portions (Deuteronomy 7:22). We learn to eat and digest milk before we receive the pleasure of solid food (Hebrews 5:14).
Nathanael was in for the surprise of his life with Jesus, the Son of the carpenter from Nazareth he now confessed as Son of God (John 1:49). He thought nothing good could come from Nazareth, and certainly not the Messiah (44-46). However, it took so little to get Nathanael to recognize his ignorance concerning the things of God. If Jesus could know his heart (47) and location under the fig tree from nowhere near him (48), then He must be the Messiah Israel was waiting for—the Son of God (49).
What will Nathanael say when he sees Jesus walking on water, command the storm to calm, and raise the dead? What will be His conclusion when the Teacher rises from the dead and ascends to heaven? And what will happen when heaven opens to receive him in glory?
That is the life of every believer, from conversion to glory. Every day with Jesus is a marvel. The tempo increases as Christ reveals more of Himself in His word. We grow in the knowledge of Him and become mature, “attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13)—when He raptures us onto Himself (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17), and we see Him as He is (1 John 3:2).
Until then, give yourself daily to the study of His word and fasten your seatbelt, my friend; for you have not seen anything yet!
