The Director of your Life

The Director of Your Life

Psalm 37:23-24

New Living Translation

The Lord directs the steps of the godly.
He delights in every detail of their lives.
Though they stumble, they will never fall,
for the Lord holds them by the hand.

For Encouragement

As I meditated on this scripture today, my mind settled on the word—directs. The role of a film director came to mind. Silly, you may think, but I found it instructive when I googled it.

A film director’s responsibilities include reading and editing scripts, directing film crews and actors in a way that affects special effects, locations, etc., and overseeing the production of the last film. Ultimately, they will work with actors and other individuals on set to ensure the work aligns with the creative vision for the finished product. (https://www.nfi.edu/what-does-a-film-director-do/).

Now think about it in terms of the Lord being the director of your life. It may not fully explain it, as every illustration of a biblical text falls short at some point, but it gives an insight into understanding the outworking of the scripture.

David contrasted the blessings of the godly (Psalm 37:23-24) with the payback the wicked receives from the Lord (9-22). Unlike the ungodly, God directs and upholds the life of the righteous. God does not have to read it as the film director would do. He knows His children and the script of their lives, and He directs their thoughts and footsteps (23) by His word.

Not only does God make their way firm, but the Holy Spirit oversees its daily outworking to the end of their life. Ultimately, the outcome of the life of the upright will match the creative vision of the Father for their life—Christlikeness (Eph. 4:13).

The godly are not in control of their life but have abandoned them to Jesus as Lord (Phil. 3:8). God is actively working in your situation. Though you do not see it, God sees, hears, and understands the cry of your heart and the pain you feel. He will be out of His character not to care.

God reveals His plan for your life (Jeremiah 29:11-13) and His will, and helps you walk in it (Ephesians 1:9; Rm. 12:2). But He also knows enough of you to roll out His will to you in relevant portions and timely, too. God does that to work genuine and abiding faith in you. And like a loving father with his child, He holds your hand to ensure you do not fall when you stumble (Psalm 37:24).

So, trust Him; for every experience with Him is training faith. He reveals enough light to light your path today as you trust Him for tomorrow (Matthew 6:34).
