He Is So Close

Psalm 46:10

New International Version (NIV)

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

For Meditation

“It’s a miracle,” my wife shouted from the back of the truck. Our daughter and her family were visiting from the USA, and their two children, who were used to the music from their parents’ vehicles back home, felt grandpa’s truck was too quiet and boring. Our Radio/CD player had not been functioning for the longest time. Kayla, their first daughter, complained at last. There is no music in the car, she said.

Poor grandpa!

As I struggled to explain my sorry situation to the little ear, a familiar song suddenly filled the air. “Where is that sound coming from,” I said. “It’s the CD player,” they shouted spontaneously. I think my daughter and her husband were the most relieved. They had quietly endured the deafening silence in the truck, not wanting to offend daddy. And what a delight this was for all of us!

Thankfully, God heard the voice of little Kayla and gave her music that we all enjoyed for the rest of their stay. The sound system went dead a few hours before they left Dakar. The helpless little children yearned for music in our truck, and God provided for them. Grandpa, who had the means to take care of his sound system, received the gift of the responsibility to fix it. How instructive!

Has God ever surprised you? Isn’t He wonderful? Wasn’t your experience exhilarating? What did it teach you about Him—how closely He walks and deals with his children in need who ask—even in mundane situations like lack of music in a truck?

Whatever your situation today, whether it is a lack of satisfaction on the job, a stale and dying marriage, struggling finances, or lingering health challenges, trust God to surprise you. Just be still after you’ve prayed, and know He is God (Psalm 46:10). Like He did for my granddaughter Kayla, Jesus can exalt Himself above your situation.

God loves you, His little child, and will help you when you express your weakness and helplessness to Him in prayer; or maybe you do not see yourself as His little child. He surprises us when we least expect, sometimes for the sake of others. However, you must take responsibility and fix some other situations with your God-given strength. As He told Gideon, “Go in the strength you have… Am I not sending you (Judges 6:14)?

Shalom
