When the Numbers Don’t Add Up

Numbers 11:22

New International Version

Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”

For Encouragement

Abraham did not see how he could have a baby with Sarah when they were over childbearing ages — him at a hundred and Sarah at ninety.

Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” (Gen. 17:17-18).

It was too late for them, so let’s talk about something else, God.

Moses looked at the numbers and closed the book on God similarly.

“Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them?” (Nu. 11:22).

They are too many to satisfy with anything in this remote, dry land where nothing flourishes. Maybe, Lord, you made a mistake by taking us by this route., Moses might have said.

The disciples of Jesus also committed the same offense — grievous unbelief — when they thought the multitude were too many to feed in that remote place (Mk. 6:35-37).

“That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” (37).

Jesus was dreaming. The best thing to do was pack up and break camp. “Each one on their own, Lord. They will find something on the way, believe us. They always have, we know,” they may have reasoned.

These are three impossible situations in three different timelines and settings, but the same thread runs through them—doubt.

Doubt eclipses faith and causes the faithful to lose their sense of God. However, they also have one common question from the Almighty to answer each time.

“Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Gen. 18:14).

So, do you think you have a problem or an impossible situation? You think the numbers do not add up for you—that they are beyond the realm of possibility for God. You woke up this morning burdened with many impossible scenarios that have drained your strength and ability to pray. The fog is too thick for visibility.

Why don’t you simply take Jesus at His word and see if there is any impossibility in Him? While you are there, acknowledge His sovereignty and worship His Majesty.

For He is God Almighty!
