That They May Live

Ezekiel 37:9

New International Version (NIV)

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’”

For Meditation

It must have been a sight—a valley filled with dry bones. Those were many bones baked under extreme temperatures of the scorching sun—lifeless and hopeless. The sight confounded Ezekiel, and while pondering it in the vision, the Lord asked him, “Son of man, can these bones live?”

What could Ezekiel say but defer to the Sovereign Lord? He alone has the answer. For humanly speaking, it was impossible. Yet, in His infinite power, the Lord commands the prophet to prophesy life to the bones. Ezekiel obeys, and the bones come together. God makes breath enter them, and they all come back to life and stand on their feet like a vast army (Ezekiel 37:1-10).

This prophecy spoke into the lives of the scattered people of Israel, pictured as dead people with no hope of restoration to their land and the revival of their spiritual life. Yet, their restoration and new life would come through God’s mighty and gracious act, instilling hope and optimism. They will know He is the Lord when He resurrects them as a nation and regenerates their spiritual life (13).

Some days are like that for us. There are days when everything around us becomes so dry and unbearably discomforting—one of those times when our spiritual life has hung on the lines in the scorching sun for so long that we can’t get ourselves down and out of it.

It may be your marital life that has suffered extreme abuse and neglect. Or could it be your children who have fallen under the influence of substance abuse and reckless living? Did the desert winds blow through your financial landscape, leaving  behind empty holdings, and the collection agency running after you? Is it your health, business, job, or your contract that has hit a snag?

Whatever your circumstances today, may the Sovereign Lord breathe life into your season of dryness. May you stand in the authority of Jesus, empowered and encouraged, to speak and command new life into your dry situation so that it may come alive and that you doubtless know that it is the Lord’s doing and that He alone deserves the glory and praise.

It is well, my friend, in Jesus’ matchless name! Amen!

Shalom.
