Peace In A Tumultuous World

Isaiah 26:3

New International Version

You will keep in perfect peace
   those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust in you.

For Meditation

Amidst the hustle and bustle of our lives, a subtle danger lurks—restlessness. This inner turmoil threatens the tranquility of our existence. We find ourselves caught in the whirlwind of busyness, striving for success and results, which only serves to unsettle our hearts. The ensuing chaos leads to anxiety and depression. However, there is a beacon of hope—prayer. It is through prayer that we can find solace. The promise of God is that He grants us peace when we pray and petition Him with thankful hearts (Philippians 4:6-7). Reaching out to Him can calm our racing and confused minds in Christ Jesus. It’s a potent means of grace that can bring us a refreshing sense of His closeness, power, and love. We fortify our faith and can confront an uncertain tomorrow with courage. Prayer, a powerful tool, is always there to guide us and bring us comfort.

However, beware of a subtle peril. It is an enemy within us. It is what we desire and decide to set our minds on—our health, finances, marital situation, work stresses, entertainment, leisure, etc. We must beware of their sneak attack on our emotions. For example, the type of movies we watch, the time we devote to the news or stay in the gossip lane, and the old hurts and pains we recall could all convulse our inner peace.

Such things can stir up unwholesome and disturbing thoughts like fear, doubt, and worry to rob us of the peace of God. So, what can you do to maintain your tranquil disposition?

One of the most powerful tools in preserving our inner peace is immersing ourselves in God’s word and trusting in His promises. As Paul advises, we should focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy (Phil. 4:8). These virtues reflect God’s presence and act as a shield, protecting us under His divine care. We can find solace in His promise through Isaiah: [He] will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you (Isaiah 26:3). In times of need, God’s word is our guiding light and source of security.

Therefore, let us strive to practice His presence, which means being mindful of God’s constant companionship and seeking His guidance in all our actions. This practice can help us maintain a tranquil disposition and continue to dwell in the peace of God that transcends all understanding in Christ Jesus. Let us hold on to the comforting promise of our Lord: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). This promise is a constant source of reassurance and comfort, especially in times of uncertainty. It’s a promise we can always rely on, a source of comfort that never fades. Amen!
