Bone of My Bones
Genesis 2:23
New International Version
The man said,“This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
For Encouragement
His eyes opened wide; his jaw dropped. It was the first time he had seen and realized himself, and it was simply overwhelming. He looked around, and there was more—the sight and sound of his environment—wow! What a beauty!
Before him were many types and sizes of trees and shrubs. A variety of fruits and flowers adorned the surroundings. A delightful aroma filled the air, accompanying the variety of fruits and flowers. As he gazed upon those wonders, seeking answers to his identity, origins, and location, the enchanting melodies of birds and insects in his surroundings greeted his ears. Amazing!
Adam closed his eyes and drifted away as nature sang to the glory of its Creator. When he came to himself, he noticed other creatures walking on fours. Their varied voices added to the Garden’s symphony, blowing his mind. What is all this and what is going on?
Then he lifted his eyes to the heavens, and, O, my! The beautiful sky, with all its host, stared at him. The entire constellation looked back at him with such warmth, he could not take it anymore. He dropped to his knees, raised his hands in complete surrender, and cried, Will somebody tell me who I am and what is happening here?
While exploring the magnificent Garden and its abundant treasures, Adam noticed that every animal appeared in male and female pairs. They cuddled, enjoyed each other’s company, conversed, and played together, but he lacked someone of his kind to connect with in like manner. As his happiness slowly diminished, his face reflected a mix of concern and loneliness. Witnessing the fiery desire within him, the Lord responded,
It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. (Gen. 2:18).
God put Adam under anesthesia, removed a rib from his side, and crafted a suitable partner for him. Adam woke up and couldn’t believe what he saw. The most beautiful of all of God’s creation stood by his side. He had seen the majesty of God’s creation around him, but this person beat them all. Completely mesmerized and captivated by her beauty, Adam exclaimed,
“This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man” (23).
“The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame” (25).
Adam and Eve lived intimately and enjoyed themselves in uncontested innocence until Satan struck the deadly blow (3:1-24).
Too bad we lost this innocence—the closeness and intimacy of the sacred covenant, the divine agreement and bond between a man and a woman called marriage.
However, it is God’s will that you recover the purpose and joy of your marriage the way it was in Eden (Ephesians 5:21-32). It is only possible with Christ Jesus as Lord, who, through His teachings and example, and the willingness to yield to Him in all circumstances, can guide you back to the Garden experience for the glory of God the Father!
Prayer
Lord, please take me back to the Eden experience in my relationship with you and in my marriage amid the storms of this life. I trust that you can do it and will do it for your glory. Amen!
