A Mirror of Integrity

Proverbs 6:16-19

New International Version (NIV)

There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
        haughty eyes,
        a lying tongue,
        hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

For Meditation

When God stops to give a list of the things He hates and detests, we must stop and take notice (Prov. 6:16-19). They are things to avoid, so we may walk uprightly with Him.

It would be unwise not to consider the warnings against folly discussed here seriously. Like the red signal at a traffic light, it is better always to check our lives against this list and avoid proceeding any further on that road. The same is true of every warning in God’s word. Every wise Christian must pay attention to every word of God given to us.

So, for our self-examination today, what are the propensities of our eyes, tongue, hands, heart, feet, speech, and actions? Do they bear the mark of integrity?

As you stand in the mirror of today’s scripture, what do you see, and how do you feel? Can you see your entire life dressed before you? Are you looking good? Can you appreciate yourself before the Lord, cheerful that your life honors and pleases Him?

A few things for us to think through. Amen.

Shalom

Pray with Me

Lord, thank you for telling us how much you hate these things. Give us the strength to avoid them, that our lives will have integrity for your glory. Amen.
